Fr. 1017a $50 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note
Fr. 1017a $50 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PMG Choice Fine 15. This Friedberg number causes a bit of a hiccup in the various listings and computer programs. Back in the day, if you wanted to own one of these, you simply had to buy it and hold it in your hand. There is a glitch in today's electronic world of currency collecting. The Friedberg catalog calls this note, "Fr. 1017," without the "a," as no "b" type exists. Track & Price calls it "1017a." The Heritage computer system recognizes only 1017, and refuses to acknowledge the "a." PMG likewise uses "1017." PCGS has either not faced one yet, or if any have come in, they have been returned ungraded or thrown away. In any event, this note is 1017 on the holder, 1017 to Heritage, 1017a to Track & Price and 1017a to this cataloger. Now that we've straightened this out, there are ten known in all grades combined, none of which grades higher than VF 20, according to Track & Price. No piece better than a raw 12 has ever auctioned, and, as the "b" note does not exist, this tiny census represents all the Atlanta Red Seal Fifties. The most recent note to sell was a raw Fine which we sold for $2760 in May of 2005. This PMG 15, which is very bright for the grade and totally problem free, should easily double that figure.
From The Thomas M.
