Fr. 1012b $50 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note
Fr. 1012b $50 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PMG Choice Fine 15. A really rare $50 Red Seal with this note raising the total known to five. This "new to the census" phenomenon in the Flynn collection is caused by Tom having started collecting in the 1960s when no one was tracking any serial numbers save for the few dozen rarest pieces. Notes that Tom acquired in the 60's, 70's, and early 80's were generally face-to-face purchases at Midwestern coin shows. Most of these notes are appearing at national auction for the first time--hence, "new to the census." This particular piece is incredibly attractive for the 15 grade and it places third among the five pieces for quality. The auction record for this number is a PCGS 35 which sold for $20,700 at a west coast sale in February 2007. The "a" type $50 Red Seal is equally rare with only three known--leaving only eight Red Seal Fifties in total from this district. With the demand for better Friedberg numbers continuing unabated, expect to see some strong bidding on this lot.
From The Thomas M.
