from the personal effects of Brigadier General Thomas H. Ruger, U. S. Military Commander of the Dakotas. Printed on 30 x 35" sheet of polished cotton, dyed a brilliant blue, with white map details. Includes the following: Map of Country Comprising Forts Meade, Custer, Keogh, and McKenney, in circular legend. With Prepared in the Engineer Office, Headquarters of Department of Dakota . Map shows details between 43-47 degrees North Latitude and 102-110 degrees West Longitude, comprising portions of western North and South Dakota, and eastern Montana and Wyoming. Within this territory, all towns, villages, county seats, railroad stations and Indian Reservations are clearly defined, as well as all routes.

Map of County Comprising the Sioux Indian Reservations in North and South Dakota. Prepared in the Engineers Office Headquarters Dept. of Dakota By Authority of Brig. Gen. T.H.Ruger. Compiled and drawn under the direction of Lieut. Haydn S. Cole 3rd Inf. Act. Engr. Officer by Topographical Asst. H.S. Strebe. Nov. 1890., printed on polished cotton, dyed blue with white details, 23 x 21". Like its counterpart above, this map shows in fine-combed detail the country of the Sioux reservations, showing wagon and other routes, railroads, towns, Agency offices, military establishments (each marked with a large U.S. flag) and local landmarks. There are several annotations in red ink, including NARCELLE'S to mark the location of the home of Narcisse Narcelle, a French trader and interpreter who was employed by the U.S. Military during the Ghost Dance period.

Finally, there are two identical copies of Scene of the Fight With Big Foot's Band. Dec. 29th 1890. Showing position of Troops when first shot was fired from sketches made by Lieut. S.A. Cloam Act'g: Engr. Officer Division of the Missouri. Pvt. James Hade 6th Cav. del. the map surrounded with a simple double ruled border, and in the lower left Traced in Engr. Office Hdqrs Dept. Dak. Feb. 20th 1891, printed on blue-dyed polish cotton, with white details, 12 x 13.5", with a scale of 1" equaling 100 yards. These maps show the position of the Indians and military troops and gun emplacements, and dramatically emphasize the hopeless situation of Big Foot and his followers. Not located in any standard sources, we suspect these were meant to be carried in the field in saddlebags.

Descended directly in the family of General Thomas H. Ruger

Condition: Folds, with some minor toning on verso of the largest map, otherwise color vibrant, cloth in excellent condition. Essentially unused, mint.
