Four Cabinet Cards of Black Children An impressive collection of portraits, including a fantastic 1881 montage of black babies with various facial expressions titled "Little Ethiopians" by Joshua Smith of Chicago. Together with a racist set of genre scenes on one card entitled respectively "The Darkies and the Melon" and "The Farmer, the Darkies and the Mellon" by C. H. Gallup of Poughkeepsie, New York reciting the stereotypical tale on the verso: "We were asked, how did you ever get them with such a natural expression. This is accounted for by the fact that hey were engaged in eating a bona fide watermelon, under which condition no darkey boy could help looking happy..." Also together with two simple family portraits, one of an infant, the other presenting a young boy and girl. Interesting contrast in the tone and demeanor of portraits.
