Four 1870's checks from three PIONEERS
1) JOHN BIDWELL. Bidwell lead the first wagon train to successfully reach California in 1844! This was an amazing fete as they were truly blazing the trail west! Participated in the Bear Flag Revolt, ran for governor and was an unsuccessful candidate for President of the United States under the Prohibition Party. 2) JAMES FAIR. Fair was one of the Big Four that struck it rich in California. He was a superintendent of the Consolidated Virginia when the "Big Bonanza" was discovered. He also represented Nevada as a United States Senator. 3) JOHN MACKAY (two): Mackay was the most famous of the Big Four. He and his partners started the Nevada Bank (see check) which successfully competed with the Bank of California. The Big Four made their fortune by controlling the mills and then the mines. Mackay School of Mines and Mackay Stadium at the University of Nevada were named for him. 4) This check is from Austin (same time period) from the Paxton & Curtis Bank. Curtis was to Austin as Mackay was to Virginia City. Comes with lots of historical background.
