Fossilized Titan Oyster, Central California
Presented in this lot is Fossilized Titan Oyster from Central California. Oyster fossils in Central California range in age from the Miocene epoch to the Pliocene epoch, which is roughly 16–4.5 million years old. Titan oysters were a species of oyster called Crassostrea titan that lived in the past. Fossil evidence shows that they were much larger than modern oysters. Oyster fossils have been found in several locations in central California, including the Kirker Pass, Irvington, and the Kettleman Hills. Ostrea titan fossils are intriguing because they frequently have soft tissue that has been preserved and can shed light on the anatomy and behavior of these prehistoric creatures. For instance, scientists have discovered signs of muscles and ligaments in some fossils of Ostrea titan, which shows that these oysters were able to forcefully expand and close their shells. The fossil has colours of tan, light brown and iridescent grey. Measures 4.75"W x 6.5"L x 3.25"H, weight is 3lb, 14oz.
