The History and Description of Fossil Fuel, the Collieries, and Coal Trade of Great Britain. Second edition, published in London by Whittaker and Co. in 1841. This was the personal copy (and inscribed) by John A. Church. Church wrote a well-known 1879 work, The Heat of the Comstock Mines. The Heat of the Comstock Mines (1879) analyzes the extreme underground temperatures of the Comstock Lode, where miners often faced conditions exceeding 100°F. He presents systematic measurements showing that the rise in temperature with depth was far greater than normal geothermal gradients, caused by circulating hot waters and limited ventilation. The study emphasized both the geological causes and the serious impact on miners' health and productivity, making it a landmark paper in mining engineering and geothermal studies. This fossil fuel book surveys the origins, geology, and types of fossil fuel, especially coal, with attention to its formation and mineralogical characteristics. It describes in detail the organization, technology, and labor conditions of British collieries, including methods of extraction, transport, and safety. Finally, it examines the economic and social dimensions of the coal trade, outlining its role in fueling industry and commerce in 19th-century Britain. Professionally rebound. 485pp.
