Forty Years A Gambler On The Mississippi 1st Ed.
For your consideration is a Scarce First Edition of "Forty Years a Gambler on the Mississippi" by George Devol, 1887. Devol’s classic biography of life as a con man and crooked gambler recalls, in short anecdotes, how he learned the trade of the riverboat gambler at the tender age of 13. An audaciously subtitled reprint dubbed the work “The Best Gambling Book Ever Published in America.” Considered to be the greatest riverboat gambler to ever sail the Mississippi, George H. Devol partnered with many other famous cardsharks over the years, among them Canada Bill Jones and Big Alexander. This blue cloth bound textured gold gilt hardcover is in fair to good condition, faint scuffing noted to cover edges. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing throughout, dark moisture stain to top edge. No other obvious marring noted. Measures 5.25"W x 7.5"L x 1"D
