Fort Snelling,MN - Hennepin County - 1836-1918 - Fort Snelling, MN. Stereoview :
Located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers, a vantage point from which commerce on both rivers could be controlled, the fort became a central meeting point for travelers and a trading hub for the Dakota and Ojibwe, and it remained so from 1825 to 1855. Even the American and Columbia fur companies built headquarters nearby and employees' families settled at nearby Mendota. By the 1850s the fort was demoted to a supply depot as the frontier moved West, but during the Civil War it was put into active duty once more as a training center for the Union Army. Between 1880 and the early 1900s new barracks and other buildings were erected and some of the original old stone buildings demolished. The fort remained in use until the end of WWII [Ref: www.mnhs.org/places/sites/hfs/]. This photo shows the fort atop a bluff at the juncture of the two rivers. Photographer is C.B. Chase, at Minnehaha. This photo is part of the series, Sterographics of Minnesota Scenery. C.B. Chase operated a studio in Minnehaha Falls and Minneapolis during the 1870s-80s. There is a historical blurb on the reverse. Gold matte, good focus and medium contrast. 3.5 x 7.”
