Fort Pierre,Dakota South - Stanley County - c1900 - Street Scene of Cattle Men Photograph :
Cattle men pose, including James (Scotty) Philip. Photograph measures 8”x6”, mounted on construction paper, medium contrast—suffers from some yellowing, and the focus sharp. The upper right hand corner of the photo has a minor crease. No photographer identified. St. Pierre is in the heart of the state. This is a grand pose by the cattle men of South Dakota. On the bottom of the construction paper Scotty Philip is identified as the man standing next to the metal buggy on the lower right side of the photo. Scotty Philip, born in Scotland 1858, emigrated to the U.S. in 1874. Philip built up a large ranching operation in Clay Creek. Scotty’s fame comes into play when he took over a small herd of buffalo in 1901 and is credited with a significant role in saving the buffalo from extinction. Philip died suddenly in 1911. He was a well known and liked figure in his own time.
