Very rare. This is a letter dateline Head Quarters, Ft. Churchill, N.T., July 5th, 1863. Addressed to Col. Richard C. Drum, Asst. Adjutant General in San Francisco, from Commanding Office Major Charles McDermit, 2nd California Volunteer Cavalry. Message explains the absence of Captain Thomas E. Ketchum from post of June 30, 1863. "Captain Ketchum is an honest and sober man, and would not disobey an order or willfully commit a breach of discipline....his detention was accidental." McDermit served in the Mexican War and was elected first sheriff of Siskiyou County, CA in 1852. He was commissioned caption of Co. M 2nd California Cavalry in 1861. He was promoted to major and lt. colonel in 1865. He commanded Ft. Churchill from 1863 until his death in 1865. He was killed by Indians on Aug. 7th, 1865 in Humboldt County, Nevada. Fort McDermit and the town of McDermit are named after him. Ketchum served at Ft. Baker and Ft. Humboldt in addition to Ft. Churchill.
