A Montana relic. This barred window may possibly be from the Old Stone Guard House at Fort Assiniboine. It was found by a family member sometime in the first half of the 20th century partially buried in the refuse pile/pit of old Fort Assiniboine, South of Havre, Montana. In the 1880 stereo card image taken by F. J. Haynes of the Old Stone Guard House at Fort Assiniboine it shows 2 small rectangular windows high up. The fort was in existence from 1879 ( 3 years after Little Bighorn Battle) to 1911 with the Old Stone Guard House being replaced in 1905 with a larger up to date one made of brick. The framework/bars measure 28" by 20 1/2" by 3" and still retains a portion of its wood frame which appears to be shown in the 1880 photo by Haynes. The wood is held in place by 2 large wire nails which would have replaced the original square nails as maintenance and updates were done over the years to maintain the bars integrity. The bars which are ¾ inch solid steel rods are blacksmithed to the upper and lower framework. Fort Assiniboine was at the time, one of the largest military forts ever built in the United States with 104 buildings. Michael Westergard Collection Inv:323
