Fabulous archive consisting of 230 checks, three different types, issued 1859-1861. All are D.O. Mills & Co., Bankers, checks with Sacramento datelines that have been crossed out and "Forest Hill" written in. Three types: creme with black print, creme with green print, and green with red print. First two types printed by John C. Beale (NY), last type Wm. Eveedells Sons (NY). All cut cancelled, most in very good condition. Checks signed by Hardy & Kennedy. One check that stands out right away is issued to H.H. Bancroft, noted California bookseller and historian (namesake for Bancroft Library), endorsed H.H. Bancroft & Co. on reverse. Or a check issued to Naw Hong, a Chinese merchant (signed on the reverse with Chinese characters). What other names are in here? Forest Hill (now Foresthill) was founded during the Gold Rush in 1850 and quickly became an important trade center given its location between Auburn and Coloma. A landslide during the winter of 1853 exposed many gold nuggets at the head of Jenny Lind Canyon. D(arius) O(gden) Mills travelled from New York to California in 1849, opening his Sacramento business soon after. He later co-founded both the Virginia & Truckee Railroad and the Bank of California.
