Fore-Edge Painting of an Island Shore Scene
Fore-Edge Painting of an Island Shore Scene on John Williams' A Narrative of Missionary Enterprises in the South-Sea Islands; with Remarks upon The Natural History of the Islands, Origin, Languages, Traditions, and Usages of the Inhabitants (London: John Snow, nd 19th century ), 506 pages, brown cloth with gilt spine titles and gilt and black decorative stamping on the boards and spine, 8vo (5" x 7.5"). Illustrated with wood engravings by G. Baxter. John Williams was a member of the London Missionary Society. The fore-edge painting here depicts five longboats rowing to the shore of an unspecified island inhabited by indigenous tribespeople, an island much like those discussed in the book at hand. The painting is in excellent shape, on a book in good condition, tightly bound, but worn around the edges and folds. Still, a beautiful example of the art of the fore-edge painting.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
