Forbidden Planet Original Joshua Meador Id Monster Cel
Forbidden Planet Original Joshua Meador Id Monster Cel - When legendary producer and MGM president Dory Schary decided to create the ultimate high-class Science fiction motion picture, he dipped into the pool of the greatest writer of all time, William Shakespeare, and crafted a futuristic space adventure based on "The Tempest". The film was "Forbidden Planet" (1956), and it is considered the first, and one of the all time greatest high-class Science Fiction films ever produced (inspiring everything from "2001: A Space Odyssey", to "Star Trek", to "Star Wars"). As in the Tempest, Schary had to create an "Id Monster", as well as many other realistic effects, such as laser blasts, and fire storms. As with all aspects of this production, he wanted these effects to be like nothing ever seen before. The best man for the job was Joshua Meador, who virtually single-handedly created special effects animation exclusively for Disney Studios. His astonishing work could be seen in such classic sequences as the over-flowing water effects for "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and the hellish fire of "Night on Bald Mountain, and heavenly fog of "Ava Maria" in "Fantasia". He continued to work for years on virtually all of Disney's live-auction and animation features, including effects for "Peter Pan", "Sleeping Beauty", "Darby O'Gill and the Little People", and his masterwork: "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea". Only someone with Schary's persuasion and power could convince Walt Disney to loan out his prized genius. So, Meador worked on the film, especially in creating the iconic "Id Monster" Besides being terrifying when it is finally "visualized" through the crewmembers high energy beams, there are some wonderful "in-jokes" to the creature. It seems to have a goatee beard, suggesting its connection to Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), and its visual and audio "roar" is a purposeful pun on MGM's (the films studio) roaring Leo the Lion, which Meador thought was especially apropos being that he was "slumming" away from his home base at the biggest studio in the world. This is an incredibly rare original pencil animation drawing cel frame by Joshua Meador, used in the actual production and creation of the Id Monster, in the sequence where the Monster finally appears and ends up killing several members while being attacked. it is on its original keyed and registered animation paper, with the original protective acetate cel. "M-38" is written on the lower left hand corner. It comes from Jerry Neeley, legendary film historian, collector and owner of the famous "Jerry's Video" in Los Feliz, CA, which was one of the best and most talked-about video stores in Los Angeles especially known for stocking virtually to find Sci-Fi, Fantasy, horror and rare films and early TV shows. Customers, collectors and throngs of industry people would come from miles to talk to Jerry, whose knowledge and memory were encyclopedic. This remarkable find comes with a Letter of Provenience from Jerry Neely's widow and co-owner of the store. (Animation cel drawing is approx 30"x12". ) -
