Folk Art Wood Carving By Navajo Delbert Buck
For your consideration is an Original Signed Folk Art Wood Carving by Navajo artist Delbert Buck, Cowboy Sitting on a Horse. In recent years, wood figurines hand carved by self-taught Navajo artists have developed into Navajo Folk Art. These carvings of traditional personal images and indigenous animals are characteristic of the cultural integrity on the Navajo people. Strong cultural values provide for and sustain the artistic traditions of the Navajo. Like other Navajo folk artists, Delbert is self taught with the unusual distinction of starting at the ripe old age of nine. His artwork started in an innocent way with the carving of toy guns for his younger brothers. The idea of carving figures just came to him. He first thought of carving a horse as he is an avid lover and participant of rodeo with his favorite even being bull riding. Delbert's work was soon recognized by avid folk art collectors Chuck and Jan Rosenak as well as Pat Eddington and Susan Makov. Both couples featured Delbert's work in their books, "The People Speak - Contemporary Navajo Folk Art" and "The Trading Post Guidebook." All of his carving is by hand. He uses acrylic paint and a wide variety of found materials. Paper, fabric, yarn, and wool all find their way into his work. He even sews the clothing on his figures, as taught by his mother. This whimsical piece by Delbert has fabulous colours and designs throughout the piece. Navajo imagery adorns the horse blanket, riflestock, and scabbard. This wood carving is in very fine condition, no marring noted. Measures 13"L x 18.5"H x 6.25"W
