Foley by Frederick Rhead Intarsio Ware Bowl, Hamlet Act 5 - Scene 1
This bowl is part of a series highlighting Shakespearean themes and features a vibrant and detailed interpretation of Hamlet, Act 5, Scene 1. The inner walls of the bowl are decorated with polychrome illustrations referencing key elements and characters from the play, including depictions of the gravediggers, the jester Yorick, and the castle of Glamis. These illustrations are segmented by panels of floral and geometric motifs in stylized Art Nouveau fashion. The center interior features a deep green glaze surrounded by a ring bearing the quote from the play in gilt uppercase lettering. The exterior of the bowl is similarly rich with color, encircled by a stylized floral design in a palette of ochre yellow, green, and blue on a brown background. The foot is glazed in a deep blue, adding contrast to the colorful narrative scenes. The underside of the bowl bears the black printed mark of The Foley, INTARSIO ENGLAND, with a crown and monogram design, along with the hand-painted pattern number 3506, and the word "Copyright."
