Lithograph measures 10" x 16" in size and has been hand-signed in pencil by Robert Layher, Dick Rossi, Edward Stiles, Chuck Older, Charles Baisden, Edwin Fobes, George Bailey, Eriksen Shilling, Bob Keeton, Paul Greene, Joseph Poshefko, Frank Losonsky, John Petach, Robert Raines, Frank Anderson, and Carl K. Brown.
The 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force in 1941-42, also known as the Flying Tigers, was composed of pilots from the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC), Navy (USN), and Marine Corps (USMC), recruited under presidential authority and commanded by Claire Lee Chennault.
The Group consisted of three fighter squadrons of around 30 aircraft each. They first saw combat on December 20, 1941, 12 days after Pearl Harbor. AVG pilots earned offical credit, and received combat bonuses, for destroying 296 enemy aircraft, while lossing only 14 pilots in combat.
A portion of the sale of this auction will be donated to the General James. H Doolittle Scholarship Fund. The General James H. Doolittle Scholarship Fund was founded to assist college students by awarding one scholarship annually in the maximum amount of $5,000 to a deserving student who is pursuing a baccalaureate or advanced degree in aeronautical engineering or an aerospace science. Students are selected based on their scholastic achievement, school and community participation, demonstrated leadership potential and financial need.
