Giambologna became well known for a fine sense of action and movement, and a refined, differentiated surface finish. Among his most famous works are the Mercury of which he did four versions, poised on one foot. He is depicted wearing a winged petasus on his head and winged sandals which give him speed in flight. He carries the caduceus in his hand, the staff given to him by Apollo that has come to symbolizes the practice of medicine. The god raises one arm to point heavenwards, in a gesture borrowed from the repertory of classical rhetoric that is characteristic of Giambologna maniera. The quality of this refined art is rarely found in recasted bronzes. This sculpture was cast using the Lost Wax Method and is mounted on a gorgeous heavy marble base. Bronze Dimensions with Marble Base: Height 11 X Width 12 Inches. Weight: 10 LBS.
