These are locking tools for the opening of the Space Shuttle doors, kept in an original Space Shuttle case and painted by the artist Andora – a unique combination of space memorabilia and art
This is an original flown case of the Space Shuttle, which was developed by the US aerospace NASA. Inside this gray aluminum case are two yellow tools and one key that are used to close the gear doors at the bow of the Space Shuttle. The case is painted by the German artist Andora (b. 1958) and shows the emblem of the Russian mission Soyuz TM-25 designed by Andora twice. The emblem that the artist designed in 1997 for the mission Soyuz TM-25 depicts also the names of the spacemen Reinhold Ewald, Vasili Tsibliyev and Aleksandr Lazutkin who flew to the Russian space station Mir.
The inscriptions ‘left’ and ‘right’ are visible on the tools. The devices and the case bear multiple labels, numberings and inscriptions, also from the NASA. The devices and the case are in a good but visibly used state. The dimensions of the case are 25 x 40 x 24 cm.
Andora (b. 1958)
Grown up as Andreas Hoge in Berlin-East, in the course of his career the artist, pop art painter and cosmonaut put on the pseudonym Andora. Accused of preparing for the flight from the GDR, he was expatriated to Berlin-West. He studied social education from 1980 until 1984. Afterwards, he started creating his first paintings that were of neo-expressionist manner. Later, conceptual installations and video techniques succeeded. Andora left the traditional canvas as a painting surface in the 90s and entered the three-dimensional reality with his pictorial language of bizarre creatures of a comic-like world and painted everyday objects. He accepted various commissions by large corporations, for example by WEST. This culminated in painting a Russian Proton rocket, which was then shot into space. Today, Andora lives and works in Berlin.
