Flown Microfilm (2x1.5 ) mounted in a clear lucite globe (3 ) on top of a black lucite block (3x3x1.
Flown Microfilm (2x1.5") mounted in a clear lucite globe (3") on top of a black lucite block (3x3x1.5") with the inscription: "This microfilm of the (Christian Science) Monitor's first front page went to the moon aboard Apollo 14". The sphere is part of an ornate lucite display piece with a descriptive back. A photocopy of a note regarding the history of the microfilm is included. It was flown at the request of Mrs. Shepard on behalf of Principia College; where Alan Shepard's two daughters attended. The college, run by Christian Scientists, could not be honored as it was a for-profit institution. As a compromise, NASA agreed to fly the microfilm and give it to the school. A similar display unit containing a piece of the same microfilm is on display at the College museum. "The base of the sphere containing the microfilm has a label that reads: "This microfilm of the front page of the Christian Science Monitor's first edition dated November 25, 1908 was taken to the moon on February 5, 1971 aboard Apollo 14. This is one of 100 carried by Captain Alan B. Shepard, Commander of the mission". This is a striking presentation of a rare flown artifact. FLOWN
