Florence Nightingale Signed Book: Notes On Nursing For the Labouring Classes. (London: Harrison, 1868), abridged edition, 116 pages, in paper wraps, 16mo (4.25" x 6.5"), contains a tipped in ANS of Florence Nightingale. The tipped in note reads, "W.F. Forsythe- Pray believe me, ever your faithful serv[ant] Florence Nightingale". Florence Nightingale spent her life changing the face of nursing; a profession which heretofore was reserved for poorer women and women of ill repute who followed armies around. Nightingale, a quondam well-to-do British aristocratic daughter, was concerned with the appalling treatment of the legions and the poor and indignant. She was nicknamed "The Lady of the Lamp" for her Grecian lamp she always carried while visiting the soldiers and sick at night.

The first portion of the book reads, "…In watching disease, both in private houses and in public hospitals, the thing which strikes the experienced observer most forcibly is this, that the symptoms or sufferings generally considered to be unavoidable and peculiar to the disease are very often not symptoms of the disease at all, but of something quite different- of the want of fresh air, or of light or of warmth, or of quiet, or of cleanliness, or of punctuality and care in administration of diet, of each or all of these. And this quite as much in private houses and cottages as in hospitals..." The book is in fine condition; wraps are slight soiling with small tears on the edges; corners bumped; paper on spine is worn.
