</font></strong>Fernand Toussaint was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1873. He is celebrated for his still lifes and figurative subjects among other things. Toussaint studied under the talented Jean Portaels at the Academy of Fine Arts in his native city, where the art of drawing was highly stressed. In 1891, after receiving some very thorough training, he left for Paris to continue his studies. Once there, Toussaint met the great Alfred Stevens, who was then at the height of his career. With Stevens? assistance, Toussaint developed his own unique style that revolved around elegance and draughtsmanship with an impressionistic approach. He exhibited his work throughout Brussels and in Paris, which eventually lead to the presentation of a medal in 1901 and a gold medal in1929 for his shows. The same year he received the gold medal, Toussaint?s exhibit was featured in the influential Parisian magazine L?illustration, and an art critic by the name of Mario de Marchi wrote, ?Toussaint is the undisputed master at capturing the grace and charm of women.? With such high praise as this, it is no wonder that he has such a prominent auction record. Toussaint passed away in 1955.
