Floating down the Hudson. Lengthy letter penn
Floating down the Hudson. Lengthy letter penned by preacher W.M. Reynolds aboard the "Steam-boat Empire," Oct. 17, 1843, 7 1/2 x 1 2 1/4 , 3 1/2 pp., to his wife in Gettysburg. "It is a glorious day on this river over which our palace boat is passing at full speed. Lovely is the scenery that surrounds us. We have just passed Kinderhook and are getting into the neighborhood of the Highlands...The hills that rise from each bank of the Hudson are decked in their most gorgeous [fall] colors. Beautiful too are the villages...we pass every half-hour with their neat & even splendid houses & quiet fields to which steeple or dome with its bright covering seems to preach peace...." Description of his trip through upstate New York, including Johnstown, Fonda, and Albany. Nearly separated at two horizontal folds, but no loss of text and otherwise good.
