Flintlock tinder lighter, lock plate maker-marked “Allertvette Detmolt”. This high grade tinder lighter is in overall very good condition showing a pleasing brown patina to “barrel”, lock plate and mechanism, crisp action that includes a two-stage trigger that when first pulled, releases the “barrel” cover to the left side, exposing the rope wick and with a second pull, the trigger releases the wick to a vertical stance and simultaneously releases the brass tinder lighter front stand which allows the lighter to remain erect and balanced. This lighter is made to look exactly like a flintlock pistol and is approx. 13” overall with a 7” iron “barrel”. The brass mountings are in excellent condition and show quality workmanship including extensively ornate brass inlay on the left side of the stock, scalloped trigger guard, ornate butt cap and brass muzzle tip. The wood stock is in very good condition and shows nice burling and graining with “M. Hartmann, Heidenheim” (probably the original owner) stamped in the wood on the left top side of the wrist. The finest example of this form of early lighting device we have seen and formerly in the Tom Wimberley collection. Est.: $4,000-$8,000.
