Flintlock dueling pistol signed “Constable, Philadelphia” on barrel and lock. .56 caliber smoothbore, 9-1/4” barrel, 16” overall medium to heavy weight octagon barrel, half stocked, adjustable set trigger, engraved iron mounts, checkered wrist, single gold banded at breech with deep set maker’s cartouches, silver overlaid and marked with maker’s name and city. The barrel shows a deep brown patina with strong evidence of Damascus striped pattern. The lock shows a grey to brown patina finish with traces of case hardening. There is scattered light rust and erosion on the barrel and beginning pebbly pinprick pitting. The lock is good with a dark patina. The neck off the hammer shows an expert old repair that is almost undetectable. The remaining parts original. The stock is good with even wear to the checkering. Some small scratches, mars, age cracks, and miniscule losses around the lock plate but at least good overall. Constable was one of the better known and higher quality American gun makers in the early 19th century who both imported and produced high quality arms. From the William R. Orbelo Collection.
