Flintlock dueling pistol in relic condition, lock signed Morton. With original 19th century engraved silver plaque nailed to left side of stock and engraved in 19th century period script, “Taken from a Rebel”. The pistol measures 15-1/8” overall with 10-3/8” barrel. Shows a .62 caliber smoothbore barrel, typical English styling. The mounts are heavily rusted and pitted, and show a very dark patina. The stock shows old period repairs, breaks, losses, and general hard use during the Civil War and throughout its working life. The pistol retains an original to the period horn-tipped ramrod that is well worn. Confederate officers and soldiers were desperate for arms, particularly handguns, and many dueling pistols which were family heirlooms saw service in the Civil War. Flintlocks were converted when convenient but a lot of old-timers liked flints as they did not have to scavenge caps and the few gunsmiths that were available were making arms for the confederacy when the war broke out. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $1,250 - $2,500
