Flintlock “Kentucky” smoothbore rifle, lock signed “John Armstrong”. .54 caliber .56-1/2” overall, 40-3/4” barrel, fancy pierced and fancy engraved patchbox with plain brass mounts and nicely engraved plaque in cheekpiece of American eagle holding olive branch and arrows. The stock has been broken at the wrist and seen extensive restoration with replacement of wood around lock, breaks, repairs, replacement of wood. Restoration is adequate but not excellent. The metal surfaces show a dark brown patina, the original rear sight is retained. The lock is reconverted from percussion to flintlock and the breech shows heavy pitting and recoloring and somewhat crude welding when converted. The sideplate shows two screw-holes and is nicely engraved. An old genuine to the period ramrod is retained. The stock shows a pronounced drop or roman nose. A good-looking wall-hangar that was probably restored 40 or 50 years ago when technology and craftsmanship did not approach today’s standards. The signature on the lock appears genuine and the patchbox is quite beautiful. From the Bernard Braverman Collection. Est: $4,000 - $8,000
