Son of Daniel Webster and Union officer who was killed in action in the Second Battle of Bull Run on August 30, 1862. ALS, one page both sides, 7.5 x 9.75, August 12, 1859. Letter to George Nesmith. In part; “Neither Mrs. L. Webter or myself have ever rec’d a dollar from John Taylor or his son for the rent of the birth place. He must have something for one or both of them & I wish to engage your friendly and professional services in the matter. Between ourselves, I do not wish to be hard, but certainly they should pay something & I will submit to you what is fair. We have to have $100 per year…I have no money, but if you will take them as your fee, you may have all the books belonging to me in the house.” At the conclusion, Caroline LeRoy Webster has added a letter to Nesmith, stating “Webster place is very expensive to keep up as you know.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, scattered toning and creasing, and light show-through from writing on opposite side.
