Admiral William D. Leahy typed letter signed, dated 14 April 1939, during his tenure as Chief of Naval Operations, the senior officer in the Navy. He writes on official letterhead to Miss Clytie Sweet about the San Francisco American Legion's Mother's Day observance: ''...Wishing you every success for your Mothers Day ceremony, I remain...[signed] William D. Leahy''. One of only four five-star admirals (Fleet Admirals) appointed during World War II, Leahy served throughout the war as chief of staff to both Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman. Glue residue to verso of 7.75'' x 10.25'' single page letter and light toning. Overall near fine.
