The lot features a polychrome painted parfleche drum from the Flathead Native American Indians and dating to circa Pre-1890. The piece shows a bent wood frame which has been covered in wetted and stretched Buffalo parfleche hide and then sinew parfleche sewn. The piece has been polychrome mineral pigment painted with a red ocher background which extends to the sides of the drum and a black ocher circle at the center. The center of the drum shows wear where the piece was pounded, a true testament to its early age. The piece comes with a beater which shows a stripped willow solid wood handle which has been covered in Buffalo parfleche hide and has a nice red ocher pigment dye. The piece shows an original collection or museum tag which reads, “Blood Drum + Stick B Picked Up Polson 1962” and the collection number of “HG.JJ B-19”. The back of the drum shows four two sinew sets of ties which culminate at the center holding the hide taunt, a period correct craftsmanship. Flathead Indian polychrome painted warrior drums are very scarce. Provenance: The piece was collected in Polson, Montana in 1962 and is from a large American Indian collection in Great Falls, Montana. The drum measures overall 14 inches in diameter by 3 inches wide. The beater is 16.25 inches in length.
