Flagstaff,AZ - Coconino County - No Date - Lumber Company Photograph *Territorial* :
With the construction of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad, lumber became big business. Photograph measures 7 5/8”x6”, no matte, high to medium contrast—tends toward the blacks, and the focus is sharp. There is a small tear on the middle right and a repaired tear on the lower left corner. No photographer identified. Flagstaff is located in the heart of the state, next to the San Francisco Mountains. This is a photo of an early lumber company and their operations. In the foreground, a lone man sits on some boulders. In 1882, the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad arrived to town. The arrival of the railroad provided a demand for wood to build railroad ties. Most of the ties that extended out of Flagstaff and to distant locations came from the early lumber operations in Flagstaff.
