British soldier (1788–1855) and 1st Baron Raglan, GCB, PC. ALS, one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, December 1, 1814. Letter to Sir Charles Stuart, when Somerset was an aide to the Duke of Wellington, shortly before Waterloo. In part: “In regard to Lt. Steke, His Grace [the Duke of Wellington] regrets the necessity of refusing to forward his Memorial as he believes there is no instance in the Army of the Brevet Rank of Captn having been conferred upon any officer.” In very good condition, with uniform toning, heavier toning and dampstaining along right edge, and a few small edge tears. Decades later, Somerset, now Lord Raglan, commanded the British forces in Crimea and ordered the famous Charge of the Light Brigade.
