American soldier and politician (1835–1905), and nephew of Robert E. Lee. He notably served as a Confederate cavalry general during the Civil War, the 40th Governor of Virginia, and a general during the Spanish-American War. ALS, two pages, lightly-lined on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 8, February 24, 1870. Letter to Violet Blair. In part: “My eyes have been hurting me so much Miss Violet B. Blair, that my seeing you Saturday has become quite doubtful.” In fine condition, with a couple tiny stains.
