Union major general (1822-1901) who fought at Antietam and Second Bull Run. Porter was court-martialed in 1863 for disobeying an order from Gen. Pope to attack but was exonerated in 1878. ALS, one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, The Asphaltic Slag Paving and Roofing Co. letterhead, March 2, 1891. Letter to Col. Frank D. Pullen, in part: "I welcome your kind letter and its enclosure most cordially and your good wish to see us your way the coming summer. I deeply, however, to learn that you are not in the best of health and have been a sufferer. I hope your hopes will soon be realized and that soon you will be in the enjoyment of health, comfort and happiness. I am glad to hear that Genl. Roberts & Varney are well. I hope to see you all at Bangor this summer, but this hope has so often been disappointed that I shall not rely upon it till realized, but I shall make every effort to enjoy it. Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting at the house of an old New England friend Dr. Cyrus Hamlin a cousin of Hon. Hannibal Hamlin—& for many years a resident & good Christian & mechanical worker in Turkey." In fine condition.
