verso includes the imprint Photographic Tour From Minnesota to Montana, with Capt. Fisk's Expedition, 1866. Photographed and Published by Illingworth & Bill, St. Paul, Minn. and penciled ID View on the platte.

Captain James L. Fisk was a tough frontiersman and capable leader who was in charge of four expeditions into Montana. When gold and other minerals were discovered in Montana and Idaho, prospectors petitioned Congress to open a new route across the northern Plains. In 1862, stretched to the limit with a war on its hands, the army sent Fisk, newly promoted to captain and put in command of a wagon train, along the route of the Stevens 1853 expedition across Dakota and Montana. Fisk made three more expeditions, eventually opening the Minnesota-Montana Road. The army did not like the route, and undertook their own protection of immigrants to the northern plains, but the Great Northern Railroad took over the Minnesota-Montana Road and followed it to the Montana mines.

This image documents Fisk's Second Expedition, of 1866, when he led a party of miners and settlers to Helena. The photographs taken on the Fisk Expedition were never widely distributed, and are quite rare. Probably one half of a stereograph negative, issued as a carte.

Condition: Minor staining, bumped corners.
