In full: <I>"Mr Ames thinks it expedient to remove his son Worthington from Mr Jenks's care for some time Nat's lame knee obliges him to get his tuition at home, and both the boys can be taught by the same preceptor. Mr Ames owes it to Mr Jenks to express his most grateful acknowledgements for his able and faithful attentions to his children."</B></I> Addressed by Ames on verso to: <I>"Revd Mr Jenks".</B></I> Fisher Ames and Frances Worthington Ames had seven children, John Worthington Ames and Nathaniel Ames were the oldest. Worthington was 11 and Nat was 9 when this letter was written. Ames represented Massachusetts in the House of Representatives in the first four Congresses, 1789-1797 and was only 50 when he died in 1808. He had been chosen President of Harvard in 1804 but declined because of ill health. Lightly browned at left and at folds, else in very fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
