1931-A black and white 8.5 x 11” photo showing Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock handing a bag of mail to pilot Earle L. Ovington, on September 23, 1911. Ovington is seated in his plane, prepared to fly the inaugural airmail delivery from Garden City airfield to the Mineola post office 5 miles distant, which he accomplished in 6 minutes. The photo is inscribed as follows: “Because of her keen interest in aviation it is a real pleasure to inscribe to Miss Dorothy Smith this picture of twenty years ago showing the first pouch of airmail in history. Sincerely, Frank Hitchcock.” By 1918 the post office was issuing stamps designated for airmail service, a service that soon became routine. From the American Industrialist Collection. HKA#64140
