First Recovery of Two Satellites Nov 16, 1984 Grades ng
First Recovery of Two Satellites Nov 16, 1984 Grades ng. On November 8, 1984, STS-51A was launched into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery carrying a crew of five, Commander Frederick H. Hauck, Pilot David M. Walker, and Mission Specialists Anna L. Fisher, Dale A. Gardner, and Joseph P. Allen. This mission was unique in that it marked the first time the Shuttle had deployed two communications satellites and then went about retrieving from orbit two other communications satellites. The two satellites successfully deployed were the Canadian communications satellite (Anik), on the second day of the mission, and a defense communications satellite (LEASAT-1) on the third day. The two malfunctioning communications satellites retrieved were the PALAPA-B2 and WESTAR-VI. Both had been deployed during the STS-41B mission.Life Sciences experiments on this mission included multiple Detailed Supplementary Objectives (DSOs). A DSO is a NASA-sponsored investigation performed by Space Shuttle crewmembers, who serve as the test subjects. These studies required minimal crew time, power and stowage. Biomedical DSOs focus on operational concerns, including space motion sickness, cardiovascular deconditioning, muscle loss, changes in coordination and balance strategies, radiation exposure, pharmacokinetics and changes in the body's biochemistry.Other payloads on STS-51A were the Diffused Mixing of Organic Solutions experiment and the Radiation Monitoring Equipment. The Shuttle Discovery touched down after a successful 8-day mission at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) on November 16, 1984. This was the third Shuttle landing at KSC and the last Shuttle mission of 1984.
