First Pattern Max Weyersburg Luftwaffe Flyers Dagger with Service Commemorative Inscription, Sheath,
Introduced by the Deutsches Luftsportverband in 1934 and adopted by the Luftwaffe in 1935. According to an (included) letter from LTC (Ret.) Thomas Johnson, author of the "Collecting the Edged Weapons of the Third Reich" series of books, this is an original piece as produced in Solingen circa 1943-1945. Blade is 12" long, double edged, with "MAX WEYERSBERG/ SOLINGEN" on one ricasso. Each side has a dark finished etched panel, with one side showing oak leaf patterns, a Nazi eagle on either side, and a Luftwaffe swooping eagle in the center, and the other showing larger oak leaves surrounding "Fur Erinnerung/ an meine Dienstzeit/ bei der Aufklarungs-Abteilung/ Kornwestheim.", roughly translated "In memory of my service with the reconnaissance division in Kornwestheim". Kornwestheim is a small town in Ludwigsburg, Baden-Wurttemberg in southwest Germany. Nickel finished hilt, with brass "sun wheel" swastikas and silver fields on the guard and pommel, and a wire wrapped blue leather grip. Sheath is blue leather with darkened nickel fittings and an unmarked chain link hanger.
