First Model Winchester Hotchkiss Bolt Action Carbine

This model is also known as the Hotchkiss Magazine Gun or the Model 1883. This was the first bolt action made by Winchester and it was designed for sporting and military use. The rifle had an all blue finish with a polished bolt. The left side of the receiver wall is marked with the three line address/patent dates with arrows pointing at the middle line. The serial number is marked on the top of the receiver wall on the left side. The front sight is a fixed blade and the rear is an adjustable "ski slope" type graduated to 1000 yards. Mounted with a one piece straight grip stock with a small "J" stamped just behind the trigger guard tang, a saddle ring mounted on the left side, a brass forend and steel carbine buttplate. The accompanying copy of a Cody Records Office letter verifies the carbine configuration, that it was received in the warehouse on February 23, 1882 and shipped on July 27, 1882 to order number 32168

Very good. The metal surfaces have a plum patina with some small areas of moderate pitting, a small area of minor pitting on the left side of the receiver and some minor pitting on the butt plate heel. The stock is very good with a minor 1 1/2 inch long crack on the left side of the stock at the toe with scattered dents and handling marks. The markings are clear and crisp. The action is fine.
