First Flight West Coast to Hawaii Signed Etching
A framed and signed etching by Henry Bothin Maas (1903-1994) captioned “Nearing Molokai—July 15, 1927” and autographed by the navigator on that first historic flight by civilians from the West Coast to Hawaii in 1927. The autograph reads, “To Burke Smith, Makani mana e lane malia, aloha nui loa (Signed) Emory Bronte, July 15, 1937,” presented on the tenth anniversary of the newsmaking flight. On the reverse is a clipping from the Los Angeles Times of Monday, August 9, 1982 recounting the historic trip that Emory Bronte and pilot Ernie Smith made in their second-hand monoplane named City of Oakland, with only a box compass, good luck charm, and non-functioning radio! This was only 55 days after Charles Lindberg made his historic trans-Atlantic crossing. Bronte died at age 80 in 1982. The etching measures 6 x 8” and the overall frame size is 14 x 18.” From the American Industrialist Collection.
