First Day Production Serial Number 3 Smith & Wesson First Model 38 Safety Hammerless Double Action R
This revolver was the third Safety Hammerless made, and writer can say with confidence, made on the very first day of production in January of 1887. The accompanying factory letter gives a brief history of the Safety Hammerless and verifies the serial number, caliber, 3 1/2" barrel, nickel finish, checkered black hard rubber grips and that it was shipped from the factory to Union Metallic Cartridge Company on January 3, 1887. The top of the barrel rib is marked with the two line address/patent dates. The matching serial number is marked on the butt, barrel, and top strap. All nickel finish with casehardened trigger and blue trigger guard and fitted with replacement smooth pearl grips.

Fine. The revolver retains 70% original nickel finish with some wear on the barrel, speckled flaking on the frame and cylinder and some minor oxidation on the cylinder. The trigger guard retains strong original blue on the sides with the balance having a smooth gray patina. The trigger retains most of the original case colors. The grips are excellent with some minor scratches on the bottoms and overall mild handling marks. An extremely rare opportunity to buy a Smith & Wesson 38 Safety Hammerless manufactured on the first day of Production.
