Tommaso Guadagni was consul at Lyon in 1505, municipal councillor 1506-1527 and councillor and major-domo of Francis I in 1523 (date shown on the medal). When Francis I was captured by Charles V, Guadagni offered his assistance to the French crown, lending fifty thousand ducats for the ransom. When the King returned he was awarded with a position in the royal administration and received many honors and privileges; so that when he passed away his estate was inconceivably great, including land, buildings and works of art.
