Finely made miniature dagger in the style of the 17th century probably by Esuebio Zuluoaga showing precise multicolor gold Damascene on the hilt, grip and scabbard. The dagger measures 6 ¾” overall with 4 ¾” blade and is completely decorated on both sides. The blade is plain and never marked and intended to be used as weapon. The condition is very good plus showing just some minor normal aging. Zuluoaga studied in all of the great museums in Europe and apprenticed under French gun making legend Le Page. He re-created the lost art of Damascening gold in Europe and opened an armory in Toledo, Spain where he decorated all sorts of arms and artifacts through the 19th century and into the early 20th-century.He won many awards at world exhibitions. He was responsible for reviving this art in Toledo and it is still practiced today but not as fine quality as the process has changed using much less gold and of an inferior quality to the 19th century work. It is our opinion that is one of his earliest and best works probably pre-dating the opening of the Toledo Armory where he advertised and marked all his work, “Toledo”. Est.: $2,500-$5,000.
