Fine original portrait of lady by noted American artist W. R. Leigh, signed lower left, dated 1951. Approx. 42” in height by 36” in width (painting only). Oil on canvas, nicely period framed. Painting is in goodcondition with slight cracking, small distresses, no major damage or flaws. Just slight cleaning and minor conservation needed. Frame shows a few areas of slight damage. W. R. Leigh was one of the foremostpainters of the American West, who was a contemporary of Russell and Remington, and though panned by critics for his colors and style, he brought modernism and vibrant colors into Western art. Leigh was welltrained and was capable in nearly all art forms and mediums and took some commissions for portraits during his career, generally from wealthy Eastern clients in his New York studio. Western subjects in this size havefetched upwards of $400,000. This painting, though not as marketable, we would consider a major work by this artist.
