This is a very fine example of an early production Burgess pump action shotgun with the Damascus twist pattern barrel. The Burgess gun company was established in 1982 by Andrew Burgess, a very prolific gun designer in the late 1890s. Burgess was credited as having numerous mechanical patents for various firearms used by several of the well know arms producers. These shotgun were manufactured only from 1892-1899 before the company and all the patents were purchased by the Winchester Firearms Company. Serial numbers started at 1,000 so this is a very early example bearing serial number "96" which features a hand cut serial number in a script pattern a full length Damascus twist steel barrel that is marked with the three-line, patent dates of the Burgess company with the top of the breech block cover marked "BURGESS GUN CO./ BUFFALO, N.Y. U.S.A.". It is fitted with walnut stock with a gutta-percha, type pistol grip that also functions as part of the pump action mechanism with a hard rubber buttplate o the end, marked "BURGESS GUN CO" in a circle around a dog and pheasant. It has a deluxe checkered forearm has a metal end cap.

Very fine with 90% of the Damascus brown twist/blue finish present on the barrel, magazine tube and forend cap and the casehardened receiver turning a silver gray patina. The stock and forend are both very fine with 98% of the factory varnish showing only minor handling marks overall. The markings are clear and sharp and the action works perfectly. A very desirable early pump action type shotgun that is in very fine condition.
