Fine Winchester Second Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Second Model manufactured in 1880 with the dust cover rail secured to the receiver with two screws and dust cover with the oval thumb print. The top barrel flat is marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN.CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight, the upper tang is marked "MODEL. 1876." and the serial number is on the lower tang. It's equipped with a special order Lyman folding combination front sight and a folding leaf sporting rear sight graduated to "10". The rifle is finished blue with a casehardened forend cap, hammer, lever and buttplate. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate and sling swivel. There is also a sling swivel factory mounted on the forend cap. The accompanying factory letter verifies the rifle configuration, 45/75 caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, and that it was received in and shipped out of the warehouse on September 9, 1880 to order number 21740.

Fine. The barrel and magazine retain 50% plus of the original blue finish with high point and handling wear, and some spots where the finish has flaked. The receiver and dust cover retain 60% of the original blue finish with wear on contact points and the side plate edges and scattered patches of light pitting. The hammer, lever and buttplate retain large amounts of the original case colors with scattered patches of discoloration. The wood has been lightly sanded and reoiled, and are good overall with a few minor handling marks. This is a good original example of a scarce and very desirable Winchester Second Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle.
