Fine Winchester Second Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Winchester Model 1876 Sporting Rifle with special order features and factory letter. The letter describes it as "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 45/75, Barrel Type: Octagon" and "Trigger: Plain". The letter further states that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on September 9, 1880. The rifle has a blue barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver and dust cover. The hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain walnut. The octagon barrel has a special order Lyman folding combination front sight and a folding leaf sporting rear sight graduated to "10". Factory sling swivels are mounted on the forearm cap and stock. The receiver has the Second Model dust cover with indented oval thumb-piece and screw fastened guide rib. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for a rear sight. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The top of the barrel is roll stamped "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN.CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The upper tang is roll stamped "MODEL 1876." in fancy letters. The serial number, "10432" is stamped in script on the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw.

Fine. The barrel and magazine have 50% plus of the blue finish with high-point and handling wear and some spots were the finish has flaked. The receiver and dust cover have 60% of the original blue finish with wear on contact points and the side plate edges and scattered patches of light pitting. The hammer, lever and buttplate retain large amounts of the original case colors with scattered patches of discoloration. The stock and forearm have been lightly sanded and reoiled and are good overall with a few minor handling marks. This is a good original example of a scarce and very desirable Winchester Second Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle.
