Fine Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle with Accessories and Factory Letter

Third Model manufactured in 1885 with the dust rail guide integral to the receiver and dust cover with the serrated rear edges. The top barrel flat is marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS.NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S -IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860" ahead of the rear sight and marked with the caliber designation "CAL 45-60" at the breech. The upper tang is marked "{MODEL. 1876}", the serial number is on the lower tang and the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is engraved "40-60". The barrel is equipped with a dovetailed German silver blade front sight and an adjustable buckhorn rear sight. Full length magazine, blue finish with casehardened hammer, lever and buttplate, and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the rifle configuration, 40/60 caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, that it was received in the warehouse on October 19, 1885 and shipped to order number 1782 on October 27, 1885. The rifle is complete with a Winchester loading tool and single cavity bullet mold. The loading tool is blue and has the Winchester markings on one side and "40-60 W.C.F." on the opposite side. The single cavity bullet mold has a commercial blue finish and walnut handles with the "40-60 W.C.F." caliber designation on one handle.

Fine. The rifle retains 60% of the original blue finish. The barrel has most of the blue finish remaining. The magazine finish has faded to a blue-gray patina. The sides of the forearm cap have moderate finish wear. Most of the blue finish is present on the top and sides of the receiver and dust cover. The blue is thin and there are several spots of light pitting on the side plates and both sides of the receiver. The blue on the upper and lower tang has aged to a brown patina. The hammer, lever and buttplate have 60% of the original case colors remaining. The markings on the barrel and receiver are sharp. The stock and forearm are good with light-moderate handling wear and traces of the original finish. The bullet mold and loading tool are good overall and retain 30% of the blue finish and scattered patches of light pitting. This is a fine example of a scarce and desirable Winchester Third Model 1876 Rifle.
